from the front is to the effect:-

(1) that Marshal Wu P'ei-fu is prepared to attack
Chang-sha from three directions and will appoint General Chao Heng-ti (1915), a former tupan of of Hunan, to be commander-in-chief of the allied forces
to repel the attack on Hunan;
(2) that Marshal Fu intends to remove the Hupeh Military Governor for his hesitating attitude towards the situation in Hunan; and
(3) that the Honanese bandit general, Fan Chung-siu,
who is a partisan of the Canton Government, is con- centrating his troops between the Honan and Hupeh provinces for an attack on K'ai-feng-fu. Other information, obtained by Colonel Hayley Bell from different sources, indicates that Chang-sha has been re- captured by the northern troops with the assistance of naval craft in the Tung-ting lake. It is said that the combined forces of General T'ang Sheng-chih and of the expeditionary army from Canton have been put to rout with heavy loss. It is even said that the casualties totalled
more than 20,000 and that the Cantonese 4th Army under General Li Chai-sum suffered most.
I have the honour to be,
şir,
Your most obedient/ humble servant,
Governor, &c.,
